Argus Makes a Splash! : A Historic Milestone for the United States Coast Guard and Eastern Shipbuilding Group

PANAMA CITY, FL - They came by land and by sea to watch the christening and launch of the United States Coast Guard Cutter Argus (WMSM-915) at the Nelson Shipyard. The launch of the USCGC Argus on October 27th, 2023 was a historic moment for the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and a major accomplishment for Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
Eastern Shipbuilding Group is a family owned business that employs over 2000 personnel in our local area and has come back from hard times after Hurricane Michael and COVID. Eastern Shipbuilding Group won the contract to build four Coast Guard offshore patrol cutters in 2016. The USCGC Argus is the first of these to be launched. This cutter will replace the aging medium endurance cutters currently in use by the Coast Guard.
Over two thousand people entered the Eastern Shipbuilding Group yard at Nelson Street while over 25 boats gathered in the bay to watch the splash up close.
Admiral Linda Fagan, Commandant, USCG gave the keynote address for this historic event, which was also attended by Congressman Neal Dunn, M.D. (FL-2), Rear Admiral Chad Jacoby, USCG, from USCG Acquisition. Captain Beverly Kelley, USCG Retired, was given the honors of the Ship Sponsor and broke the ceremonial bottle of champagne across the bow during the christening. Blessing of the vessel was performed by Father Thomas Kennell from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
North Bay Haven Sea Cadets, The Golden Warriors, sharply provided the Presentation of the Colors for the event. The sound of bagpipes in the air was provided by Panama City Pipes and Drums.
It was truly a memorable ceremony on a beautiful day to record a historic moment. The launch of this spectacular ship culminated with a huge splash and a four-foot wave enjoyed by the spectators in the yard and rocked the boats in the bay. What a moment! Well Done Eastern Shipbuilding Group!
