LYNN HAVEN, FL - Lynn Haven’s city commission named its chambers after former mayor Walker T. Kelley in honor of his long service to the city. The naming took place at a dedication ceremony on January 11, 2025.
Kelley’s life is significant for his lifelong commitment to serving his country as well as his community. He began his long career of service by joining the United States Air Force, in which he served 24 years, eight months, and ten days.
During his military service, Kelley continued his education, then finished it after retiring from the Air Force in 1979. After college, Kelley became a patrolman in Callaway and worked his way up to police chief.
After retiring from the police force and moving to Bay County, Kelley got involved in local politics, motivated by the desire to make positive change.
In 1986, Kelley was appointed to Lynn Haven Planning Commission, then was elected to a city commission term of four years.
Then in 1998, Kelley was elected as mayor of Lynn Haven, a position in which he served until 2015. As mayor, he brought many new businesses and jobs to the city, which he considers to be his proudest accomplishment. He became Lynn Haven’s longest serving mayor.
Kelley’s political career doesn’t end there. He has been a part of countless civic organizations and committees over the years, such as the Military Affairs Commission, the Florida Transportation 2025 Committee, and the Bay Disadvantaged Transportation Committee.
Kelley’s legacy is one of dedicated service and care for his community. Much of Lynn Haven’s current prosperity can be traced back to his work.
“He’s demonstrated what it means to have a lifetime of service,” Lynn Haven Mayor Jesse Nelson said. “After serving his country, he could have easily just vacationed while he was here in Lynn Haven, but he decided to still get involved and serve his community.”
Kelley appreciated the naming of the commission chambers but highlighted that his main goal was serving the community. He remains optimistic about his city’s future.
“Lynn Haven is still a great place to live, work, and play, and be that shining city on the hill,” Kelley said. Currently retired, Kelley’s example will continue to be an inspiration to his community.
A healthy Bay County requires great community news.
