Oath of Office

by Victoria Routh

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Every four years we hear those words from someone we expect to uphold them, and for those of us who consider ourselves true Americans, it is not a responsibility to be taken lightly.  While the vast majority of our leaders go unrecognized, with only a select few having done something worthwhile, there’s still an expectation of leadership that comes with advocating for the American people.
As 2024 closed out with the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, and 2025 having brought the Inauguration of President Donald Trump, emotions are high among the American people.  Reflections and hopes are ever present as we remember the past and look to the future.
Born James Earl Carter, Jr., our 39th President was responsible for securing peace talks between the Egyptian and Israeli leaders, bringing much awaited progress to a treaty between the nations.  Although diplomatic relations proved to be challenging, his determination and dedication remained fervent, and he continued to advocate for peace, human rights, and conservation long after his presidential reign.  President Carter passed away on December 29th, 2024; he was 100 years old, and the longest living president in United States history.  Rest in peace, Mr. President.
As the nation mourned the loss of a former President, a new one was set to take the Oath of Office, and just twenty-two days later, on January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump was sworn in as our 47th President.  Beginning his second term, President Trump set straight to work to deliver on his promises, signing a landmark amount of executive orders that included securing our borders, deporting illegals, and bringing rights and freedoms back to the American people.  His swift and decisive manner in taking action against the foreign and domestic threats of our nation are testimony of his dedication to his country.
While our country will always be divided politically, there’s no question that we all want the same thing.  .  .“Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”.  How we each choose to define that, of course, is entirely based upon our own dreams and ideals.  But it is because of representative democracy, that we are allowed to choose the leaders that we hope will shape those dreams and ideals into reality, and every four years, we have the opportunity to vote for the person who will help or hinder our cause.
It is surely one of the greatest responsibilities that is placed upon someone’s shoulders; making decisions that will affect millions, not just across the nation, but across the world.  Everyone from those seeking a better life, to those in service awaiting their final call home, and to those of us here, our fate rests with the one residing in the Oval Office, and his decisions, we hope, will truly make America great again.  God bless our President.
