BAY COUNTY, FL - In Northwest Florida’s mosquito-heavy summers, many reach for DEET-based repellents, but growing concerns about its safety are prompting a shift toward natural alternatives. DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), found in products like OFF!, is effective but carries risks. The Environmental Protection Agency deems it safe when used as directed, yet studies link high exposure to skin irritation, neurological issues, and, in rare cases, seizures, particularly in children. DEET can also harm aquatic ecosystems, leaching into waterways and affecting fish. A 2023 study in Environmental Health Perspectives noted DEET’s persistence in soil, raising long-term ecological concerns.
For safer options, experts recommend plant-based repellents. Lemon eucalyptus oil, derived from Eucalyptus citriodora, is CDC-approved and nearly as effective as low-dose DEET, repelling mosquitoes for up to six hours. Citronella oil, extracted from lemongrass, offers shorter-term protection but is eco-friendly. Essential oils like lavender, peppermint, and tea tree also deter bugs, though they require frequent reapplication. “Natural repellents are gentler on skin and the environment,” says Dr. Emily Carter, a Panama City-based dermatologist. “Dilute oils with a carrier like coconut oil for safe use.”
DIY solutions are gaining traction. A mix of apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, and citronella can be sprayed on skin or clothing. Planting marigolds or basil around patios naturally repels insects. However, natural options may not suffice in high-risk areas for diseases like West Nile. Always test products for allergies and pair with protective clothing.

As Bay County residents enjoy outdoor activities, choosing safer repellents protects both personal health and Florida’s delicate ecosystems. Many local stores like Ace Hardware, Tractor Supply and Health Food stores offer alternatives.   You can also find them online here on our affiliate page:  https://www.allstarhealth.com/lj_c/insect_repellent.htm
