Bay District School Libraries Have 44 Books From FDOE Removed Books List

BAY COUNTY, FL – In Florida, the Department of Education (FDOE) reported that during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, there have been 1,124 occurrences of pornographic, adult content and non age-appropriate books being removed from school libraries across the state, comprising 671 unique titles, with the remainder being duplicates. These books were written by 367 authors.
It has been reported that Attorney General, James Uthmeier, and Educational Commissioner, Manny Diaz, Jr., wrote letters to Hillsborough County Superintendent Van Ayres to encourage them to remove pornographic library materials, which has mounted pressure on book removals across the state.
Citizens in Bay County have researched if Bay District Schools (BDS) has done their due diligence to remove the 671 books and 367 authors from BDS school libraries. The list of books and authors has been available to the public for over a year. The penalty for allowing a student to check out a pornographic book is up to 5 years and/or a $5,000 fine per occurrence.
Research revealed that there are multiple copies of 44 different titles in 23 BDS school libraries, for a total of 95 books; with 37 violations of publisher recommendations about the suitability of the material to the grade levels of 15 schools.
