BAY COUNTY, FL - The Florida legislature has approved more money for the My Safe Florida Home program this year, and that’s GREAT news for homeowners.  In short, this program reimburses two-thirds (2/3) of the cost of improvements you make to your home to strengthen it against hurricanes and other storms (up to $10,000).  As with any government program, there are conditions you must meet to get these grants.
The program is limited to single-family homes that are owner-occupied, and show that a homestead exemption has been granted.  First, you must get a free hurricane mitigation inspection through the program to identify permissible work.  Then, you can apply for the mitigation grant.  You can get money for things such as hurricane clips, wraps, and shutters, but that’s not even the best part.
The best part is the ongoing savings you’ll get, year after year, on your homeowners insurance.  Let’s say you pay $6,000 a year for your home insurance, and you spend $9,000 to install hurricane shutters.  First, you’d get reimbursed a $6,000 grant from the program.  Then, when you have shown the documentation to your insurer, you’d likely see a credit of $1,000 to $1,500.  So, at the low end, you get paid back in full for the shutters in just three years.  What a deal!  There is only $280 million allotted for the program, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. So, don’t be left behind.  The program opens on August 4th.
