How to Foil the Grinch!

BAY COUNTY, FL - It’s a great time of year, and I love it. Despite not having “Santa age” kids in the house these days, it’s wonderful. So much going on, and so much to be thankful for. With such joy and wonder all around us, it unfortunately gives those few Grinches out there more chances to cause trouble. With lots of gifts and packages, there are more opportunities for shenanigans. So, here’s a few suggestions to keep the Christmas Spirit flowing:
1. Lock up. It’s simple, but we all forget. Lock your doors, both car and home, all the time. All. The. Time.
2. Make your house look occupied: Put lights (and even the TV) on timers, and maybe have a neighbor park in your driveway while you’re out of town.
3. Porch Pirates: Have packages delivered to your work, or to a trusted neighbor that you know will be home. As you’ve seen in dozens of social media videos, a Ring doorbell will show you when it’s stolen, but it won’t get that package back.
4. Bury the evidence: Don’t leave evidence of new, expensive items where it can be seen. The discarded box from a 70” TV tells thieves of your new goodies. Take these to a dumpster somewhere else.
5. Install visible security measure: Signs are good, and so is lighting. Cameras are even better. Lights should be bright (motion sensors might be added) and cameras should be very visible and hard to reach so they can’t easily be covered.
6. Hidden keys: That fake rock in your front flower bed isn’t fooling anyone. If you’re worried about being locked out, invest in a good combination deadbolt lock instead.
7. Talk with your neighbors: A “Neighborhood Watch” sign is nice. Trusted neighbors that can spot something out of place is much better. Keep an eye out for each other.
It’s unfortunate that we have to worry about such things, but being safe beats filing an insurance claim every time. Some vigilance and common sense can go a long way toward keeping Whoville happy during the holidays!
