Freezing Temperatures hitting Bay County!
BAY COUNTY, FL - According to the local and national weather services, the temperatures will continue to drop today going below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at about sundown, between 5 and 6pm. Temperatures will drop into the 20s after midnight tonight. Expect the freeze to last about 14 hours which can cause hypothermia to people and animals outdoors, and freeze outdoor water systems that are not insulated.
When temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius), it's important to take precautions to protect yourself, your home, and your belongings from the cold. Here are some key steps to consider:
__
Personal Safety:
Dress in Layers:
Wear multiple layers of clothing to trap heat close to your body. Include thermal undergarments, a warm sweater, and a waterproof outer layer.
Protect Extremities:
Wear gloves, a hat, and insulated, waterproof boots to prevent heat loss from your hands, head, and feet.
Stay Dry:
Wet clothing can significantly increase heat loss. Use waterproof outer layers and avoid prolonged exposure to rain or snow.
Limit Outdoor Exposure:
Minimize time spent outdoors, especially during extreme cold. If you need to be outside, take breaks in a warm environment.
Know the Signs of Hypothermia:
Learn the symptoms of hypothermia, such as shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and seek medical attention if someone is exhibiting these signs.

Home Protection:
Insulate Pipes:
Insulate water pipes to prevent freezing. Running a small trickle of water through the pipes can also help prevent freezing.
Seal Drafts:
Seal gaps and drafts around windows and doors to prevent cold air from entering your home. Use weatherstripping and draft stoppers.
Use Space Heaters Safely:
If using space heaters, ensure they are placed away from flammable materials, and follow safety guidelines. Turn them off when not in use or when you sleep.
Check Heating Systems:
Ensure your heating system is in good working condition. Schedule regular maintenance and have any issues addressed promptly.
Have Emergency Supplies:
Keep an emergency kit with essentials such as blankets, non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.

Vehicle Safety:
Check Antifreeze Levels:
Ensure your vehicle's antifreeze levels are sufficient to prevent freezing. Check other fluid levels regularly.
Keep Emergency Supplies:
Carry a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, warm clothing, a flashlight, non-perishable snacks, and a shovel.
Maintain Fuel Levels:
Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
By taking these precautions, you can help protect yourself, your home, and your belongings during periods of extremely cold weather. Always stay informed about weather forecasts and be prepared to adjust your plans accordingly.
