Driving Forces Behind CAUSEway Car Show: Nate Shelton and Rod Perkins Ignite Passion for Charity and Cars

by Karen Custer and Janet Pattison

PANAMA CITY, FL - In the world of automotive legends, two names stand out as driving forces behind the success of the CAUSEway Car Show – Nate Shelton and Rod Perkins. With a shared passion for cars and a deep commitment to charitable causes, these individuals bring a wealth of experience and dedication to the vibrant automotive community.

Nate Shelton, a two-time SEMA Board Chairman and former CEO of K&N Filters, is often referred to as the "Father of the Cold Air Intake." His innovations have left an indelible mark on the automotive industry, making him a true legend. With an illustrious career, Nate Shelton has not only shaped the industry but has also dedicated himself to philanthropy, aligning seamlessly with the ethos of the CAUSEway Car Show.

On the other side of this dynamic duo is Rod Perkins, the President of the 850 Crew Car Club. A visionary in his own right, Rod promoted the inaugural CAUSEway Car Show in February 2021, held at St. Andrews by The Shrimp Boat Restaurant and Marina. This event was more than just a showcase of classic cars; it was a resounding success, raising over $30,000 for the Optimist Club of the Beaches' childhood cancer program since 2014.

To ensure the legacy of the CAUSEway Car Show, Rod Perkins, along with six other like-minded individuals, formed The 850 Crew Car Club. Despite facing the loss of one of their founding members, the remaining directors injected capital, displaying unwavering dedication to their cause. With experience spanning the automotive industry, fundraising, show promotion, advertising, and business, the board has successfully steered the club toward both charitable and operational success.

Incorporated as a not-for-profit entity in 2021, The 850 Crew Car Club received its 501 C3 designation in 2022. Their commitment to philanthropy extends beyond their signature car show, as they have been invited to participate in other events, raising a substantial amount of money. Since its inception, the club has amassed over $70,000 in revenue, directing $47,400 towards their childhood cancer mission.

The club's dedication is further evident in their articles of incorporation, aiming to develop an educational program emphasizing automotive repair in collaboration with a local trade school. As they plan for the 2023 Causeway Car Show on Harrison Ave in Downtown Panama City, with the expectation of over 300 participating cars, the City Fathers of Panama City have warmly embraced the event, offering to expand facilities for future growth.

With three directors being members of the Optimist Club of the Beaches, The 850 Crew Car Club expects to continue directing contributions to the childhood cancer program. As their financial capabilities grow, they envision establishing an educational program to assist the youth of Bay County with opportunities they might not otherwise have.

The 850 Crew Car Club invites contributors and partners to join them on their journey, actively seeking support and collaboration. While they are currently requesting contributions of $10,000, they emphasize the importance of knowing that partners like St. Joe are eager to support their growth and mission.

This year’s car show was February 24th from 9 am to 3 pm, where passion for cars meets a commitment to making a positive impact on the community.
