BAY COUNTY, FL - Got a traffic ticket? Confidence waning? Buying a new, or new-to-you vehicle? What size fits and what kind? Shaky about auto technologies? Wonderin’ ‘bout the traffic laws as they affect you? Know someone who “shouldn’t be driving?”

If you said “yes” to any of these questions, then taking the AARP Driver Safety course held monthly at the Bay County Sheriffs Office on Highway 77 is for you! Reserve your seat today by calling 850.747.4700 and find out the answers to your concerns.

Here's the scoop! Beginning in June, and for the rest of 2024, these State of Florida-approved courses will be held locally each month. All licensed drivers, including teens, can attend. Trained instructors are provided, and a fee of $25 is collected at the beginning of each course except if a national AARP membership card is presented, then there’s a $5 discount. AARP United Healthcare clients receive a further discount with the presentation of their individual insurance card.

Research-based information is presented through a series of closed caption videos which are furthered by reinforcing materials in a six-hour, one-day format. Certificates of completion are awarded to each person at the end of each course day. Attendees are responsible for their own lunch and snack items though the Sheriffs Offices provides ice for cold drinks and fresh coffee most of the day. Onsite vending machines help with forgotten beverages or snacks.

Here’s an example of a class day: There are two three-unit segments of instruction. When everyone brown bags their lunch items, or make vending machine purchases, participants can eat as needed and the instructor (with class agreement) may opt to teach straight through the day. Videos sprinkled throughout the course would then allow the instructor to take his/her meal break during those videos. Morning and afternoon breaks are structured into the six hours of research-based material and attendees are encouraged to take comfort breaks as they are needed.

Many participants take this course to update their understanding. Some take it for an insurance discount per their insurance company. Still others take it to resolve a traffic citation if permitted by their county. Some take it as the first step to becoming a volunteer with the Driver Safety program. Whatever your reason is for taking an in-person class, reservations for all in-person courses are encouraged, and can also be made by calling 850 871 4020. See you soon!
