Critter Corner Spotlight: “Starfish” in Panama City Beach

by Captain Chris, Flippin Awesome Adventures

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL - Starfish, or as marine biologists call them, Sea Stars, live in our local waters of Panama City Beach. Sea Stars are truly amazing creatures, despite their name, starfish are not fish; they are echinoderms, closely related to sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea biscuits. Their unique shapes and vibrant colors make them stand out in the marine world.

Did you know they can have anywhere from five to forty arms, depending on the species? One of the most amazing abilities of starfish is their capacity to regenerate lost arms. If a starfish loses an arm, it can grow back over time. In some cases, a single lost arm can even grow into a completely new Sea Star!

Here in St. Andrews Bay, we frequently see the Banded and Striped Spiny Sea Star. With our current clear water conditions, be on the lookout for these amazing creatures while you are at the beach, and as always…. Stay Flippin Awesome. https://flippinawesomeadventures.com/
