A Callaway Settles in Florida: A Historical Exhibit Explores the Founding of a City

PANAMA CITY, FL (St. Andrews) - The Panama City Publishing Company Museum is proud to present a new exhibit that delves into the history of the Callaway family and their role in the founding of the City of Callaway, Florida. Titled "A Callaway Settles in Florida," the exhibit showcases original writings, plats, and documents from the museum's archives, providing a unique glimpse into the early days of this vibrant community.

Rev. Pitt Milner Callaway, Sr., a Baptist minister from Eufaula, Alabama, made frequent missionary trips to St. Andrews Bay in the mid-19th century. Recognizing the potential of the region, he acquired a US Land patent for a portion of the area in 1856. In the years that followed, the Callaway family would play a significant role in the development and growth of the region.

The exhibit also explores the arrival of Lillian Carlisle West, the granddaughter of Rev. Callaway, and her parents in the early 20th century. Lillian West's personal documents and writings provide a unique perspective on the experiences of early settlers in the area that would eventually become the City of Callaway.Visitors to the exhibit can expect to see a range of fascinating historical artifacts, including original plats of the area, correspondence between family members, and personal accounts of life in early Florida. The exhibit offers a rare opportunity to learn about the Callaway family's legacy and the foundations of the City of Callaway.

The "A Callaway Settles in Florida" exhibit will be on display at the Panama City Publishing Company Museum from August 5th through August 31st. The museum is located at 1134 Beck Avenue, Panama City, Florida, and is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Admission is free, and the exhibit promises to be an informative and engaging experience for history enthusiasts and local residents alike.
