PANAMA CITY, FL - The iconic, 147-year-old Governor Stone sailing schooner is set to sail into a new chapter as its extensive rebuild resumes this fall. The historic vessel, a beloved symbol of maritime heritage, capsized and was badly damaged during Hurricane Michael in 2018. The rebuilding of the schooner began in May 2022 with a historic grant from FEMA. Work stopped on the project in October of that year when FEMA required approval for damage to the keel that was not discovered until side planking had been removed. Because of the unique nature of the project and the need to ensure no major changes would be made to the vessel that might jeopardize its National Historic Landmark designation, the project amendment was not approved until this past July. Now, after a two-year delay, the Friends of the Governor Stone and Stone Loft Boat Shop are excited to be able to get back to work preserving the schooner’s storied past and ensuring its future. With the ultimate goal of returning it to its former glory, the rebuild will focus on key structural repairs and authentic restorations.
This exciting development comes as the Friends of the Governor Stone prepare to rejoin Bay and Gulf County communities with a variety of maritime exhibits and activities. The organization is hosting sailing lessons over the next two months. These lessons offer hands-on experience and are perfect for both beginners and seasoned sailors looking to refine their skills.
Adult Sailing Lessons are scheduled for September 22 and September 29 with participants learning the skills necessary to obtain ASA 101 certification. For more information, please visit Sept 22 & 29 - Adult Sailing Lessons — The Governor Stone
Additionally, our Fall Break Student Sailing Camp on October 13 and 14 provides a fantastic opportunity for young sailors to dive into the world of sailing. The camp promises a combination of fun, education, and adventure, making it an ideal choice for students eager to explore the waters and learn from experienced instructors. For more information on Student Sailing Camp, please visit October 13 & 14 Fall Sailing Camp — The Governor Stone
The Friends of the Governor Stone organization is also collaborating with the Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library in Port St Joe, FL to create a temporary museum exhibit showcasing the Governor Stone schooner and her importance to waterfront communities along the Gulf Coast as a cargo off-loader, oyster boat, mail carrier and WWII Navy sail training vessel. More information will be available closer to the opening of the museum exhibit in October.
