Ask Anne - Triggered

September 26, 2024

Dear Anne,
When people say they got “triggered,” exactly what does that mean? Is that slang for being “held up” and robbed?

Dear Curious:

Well, not exactly … but sort of, in that a person can be robbed of their peace of mind by being triggered. In doing research, most therapists and doctors agreed:  “Triggers refer to having an emotional reaction to a disturbing topic.”

For instance, viewing photos and news coverage during the recent anniversary of the 9/11 aftermath, may have “triggered” some people into depression and extreme sadness, especially if they lived in New York City during the attack.

“For individuals with a history of trauma or abuse, triggers are often stimuli that bring up involuntary memories of their traumatic past experiences,” says Amy Mezulis, PhD, and Licensed Clinical Psychologist.

Mental health issues are also contributing factors as are internal and external triggers. Triggers can elicit strong negative emotions because the person feels unsafe. I found two very good articles online by the author above and another from John McGeehan, LCSW, CADC..

If you find yourself being triggered, local experts are available through Life Management Center’s Mobile Response Team.  (850) 522-4485.
