Spectacular Aurora Borealis Lights Up Deer Point Lake in Vivid Colors
BAY COUNTY FL, October 10, 2024 — The night sky over Deer Point Lake was transformed into a breathtaking display of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, captivating local residents.
A fast coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the Sun on the evening of October 8, 2024, and was predicted by NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA) to arrive at Earth on October 10. This surge of solar particles likely contributed to the intensified aurora activity, creating a spectacular show in the night sky.
While green auroras are common, the night also revealed rare red auroras, which are usually associated with intense solar activity. According to the Canadian Space Agency, red auroras occur when solar particles interact with oxygen at altitudes between 180 to 250 miles (300 to 400 km). At these heights, oxygen is less concentrated, allowing for the higher frequency and wavelength of light that makes the reds visible.
Whether you're a seasoned aurora chaser or a first-time observer, the Northern Lights serve as a reminder of the wonders of our planet and the mysteries of the universe.
