Bay County Commissioners Declare Nov. 11-17, 2024 as Vietnam Veterans Week

by Janet Pattison

BAY COUNTY, FL - In a significant move to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those who served in the Vietnam War, the Bay County Board of Commissioners officially declared November 11-17, 2024, as **Vietnam Veterans Week**. This special week of recognition will coincide with the observance of Veterans Day on November 11, 2024, and includes several events dedicated to honoring Vietnam veterans and their families, as well as all those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era.

The decision to designate this week was made in collaboration with the Bay County Veterans Council and underscores the community’s commitment to ensuring that the men and women who served during the Vietnam War are never forgotten. This week will serve as an opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

A Week of Reflection and Honor

Vietnam Veterans Week will feature several key events designed to honor Vietnam War veterans, to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to acknowledge the enduring impact of the war on veterans’ lives.

The Bay County Veterans Council, working in partnership with the Bay County Commissioners, will co-sponsor the Annual Veterans Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony on Veterans Day, November 11, 2024. The parade will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will proceed to the Bay County Government Center, located at 840 West 11th St., Panama City. Following the parade, the wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Government Center, providing a solemn moment for the community to come together and honor all veterans, especially those who served in Vietnam.

"The Wall That Heals" in Callaway

A key highlight of Vietnam Veterans Week will be the presentation of The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The exhibit will be displayed at the Callaway Sports Complex from November 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. through November 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. This moving memorial allows visitors to pay tribute to the more than 58,000 Americans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War, as well as those still missing in action.

The Wall, which is over 250 feet long, provides a deeply personal and reflective experience for anyone who visits. The Vietnam Veterans Council, with the support of the City of Callaway, is excited to bring this important piece of American history to the community. It is expected to draw numerous visitors, including local veterans and their families, as well as those from neighboring counties who wish to pay their respects.

Honoring the Sacrifices of Vietnam Veterans

The week dedicated to Vietnam veterans holds special significance for both those who served in the war and their families. For years, Vietnam veterans faced challenges that included inadequate recognition and support, as well as social and political unrest surrounding the war. Many veterans returned home to a nation that was not prepared to fully acknowledge their service and sacrifices.

This week will serve as a moment for Bay County and its residents to reflect on the experiences of Vietnam veterans, to recognize the often overlooked emotional and physical toll of the war, and to honor the resilience of the men and women who served in one of the most difficult chapters of American military history.

A Week for All Veterans

While the week is specifically dedicated to those who served in Vietnam, it also stands as a reminder of the service and sacrifice of all veterans from every conflict. Vietnam Veterans Week is an opportunity to express our collective appreciation for the selfless dedication of all U.S. military personnel who answered the call to serve their country, no matter the era or conflict.

Bay County's recognition of this special week highlights the community’s ongoing commitment to honoring its veterans. It is also a reminder of the importance of remembering the sacrifices not only of those who fought but also of their families, who shared in the hardships of military life and the long-lasting effects of war.

Join Us in Honoring Our Heroes

Residents of Bay County are invited to participate in these important events and help ensure that the legacy of Vietnam veterans is preserved for future generations. From the Veterans Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony on November 11 to the powerful experience of The Wall That Heals in Callaway, Vietnam Veterans Week will be a time to come together, reflect, and show our deep appreciation for the veterans who served in the Vietnam War, and for all those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Let’s honor our Vietnam veterans, and all veterans, for their sacrifices—so their service will never be forgotten.
